Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy has put forth a proposal, which, if implemented, will get schools and colleges in Andhra Pradesh to conduct compulsory self-defence classes for girls from this academic year onwards.
Girl students from class VII onwards might soon get trained in martial arts like karate and judo, apart from being coached in sports and physical education.
Sabitha has also proposed to make women's safety helplines more effective. The numbers are 1091, 108 and 100.
These proposals come in view of the brutal Delhi gangrape, which has raised issues of women's safety across the country.
Colleges have been asked by the Higher Education department to appoint counsellors for students to address any behavioural issues.
