Two cases of crimes against women have been reported in Andhra Pradesh since yesterday, of which one led to the death of the victim.
Venkataramanamma, of Bandiveligandla village in Prakasham district, went alone to the fields in to feed her cattle, like she did everyday. And, as usual, her husband waited for her at home. When she didn't return for hours, worried, he went into the field looking for her. To his horror, he found her nude corpse lying next to a stream.
The case has been reported, and from the signs of struggle and the injuries on Venkataramanamma's body, the police concluded that she was raped before she was murdered. Investigations are on to discover the perpetrators of crime.
In the village of Rajuvolu, East Godavari, yet another woman was molested and abused by a group of men in her own home, aided and abetted by her own husband. Bhavani's husband came home drunk along with a bunch of "friends" who were in a similar state of inebriation. Upon being criticized by his wife, the men, including, subjected her to verbal and physical humiliation.
Shaken and distressed, Bhavani filed a complaint, and when no active response was forthcoming, she turned to a local women's group for assistance.
It is no secret that the graph of crimes against women in India is a steeply rising slope. One one hand, people all over the nation are up in arms against a govenment that refuses to take the safety of its women seriously, and, on the other the spate of rape cases and other instances of violence against women continues unabated.
