Some 35,000 women from all parts of Telangana today gathered at the Lal Bahadur Stadium in the heart of the city to participate in a colourful Maha Bathukamma celebration.
The sprawling stadium wore a festive look since the morning with flowers everywhere. Volunteers who came from various districts put together a 25-feet tall flower arrangement with about 60 small ones around it. And as groups of women started arriving from the interior districts in buses in the afternoon and adding to the arrangements, the entire ground turned into a huge orchard of flowers.
The women later formed circles around the Bathukamma set up in the middle of the stadium and started circumambulating it rhythmically singing Bathukamma songs. Women from all 31 districts participated in the sing-and-dance around the Maha Bathukamma crafted using millions of marigolds, chrysanthemums and orchids. Last year a Guinness record was made with the participation of over 9,000 women. It was breaking that record that was attempted. Nizamabad MP and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha coordinated the event.
The surroundings of L B Stadium also wore a festive look as the Bathukamma songs reverberated and filled the air with a festive spirit.
