Durga Prasad Off To World Sailing Championships
Prasad, who is making news for qualifying despite hailing from a very poor family, said that he was all charged up to pit his skills against the best in the world.
15-year-old Durga Prasad of Telangana has left for the World Sailing Championships to be held at Pattaya in Thailand where 280 sailors from 62 countries will vie for honours.
Prasad, who is making news for qualifying despite hailing from a very poor family, said that he was all charged up to pit his skills against the best in the world.
"It is fantastic to be representing India at the World Championships, and I will put in my best for my country. My coach and the tricolour at Hussain Sagar are my inspiration," said an excited Prasad.
Prasad has been training for the last two months under the tutelage of Suheim Sheikh, and has been assisted in the past few weeks by a professional Swiss coach who has been in the city to coach Telangana's sailors for a few days for the forthcoming Telangana State Championships.
The championships will be held at the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Pattaya. The racing area is located immediately offshore from the Yacht Club in the Gulf Of Thailand, between the mainland and Koh Larn.
The Yacht Club of Hyderabad has produced many national champions in the laser and optimist classes, and now a sailor from Hyderabad has qualified for the world championships after a gap of over 24 years.
Prasad will return on July 22, just in time for the Telangana State Regatta, which will be followed by the coveted Monsoon Regatta Trophy at the end of July.
