Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao today informed the Legislative Council that a complaint was lodged with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) urging it to stop the National Polavaram project works citing a threat to Bhadrachalam temple situated along the area's backwaters.
Replying to a question from Congress member Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy, Rao said that the State government also requested the NGT to order an investigation into the works as there was a threat to the famous temple as it might submerge.
"We have requested the NGT to launch an independent inquiry into our apprehensions," the Minister said. He added that the State government urged the NGT to put a hiatus on the construction works in Polavaram until the probe was completed.
