Coal production in the Singareni Collieries Company Limited came to a halt on Tuesday, following the participation of all employees in the general strike called demanded statehood for the Telangana region.
Thousands of miners and workers in Singareni Collieries voluntarily stayed away from their duties in all the 18 coal mines there, including 4 open-cast mines, spread across Bellampalli, Mandamarri and Srirampur in Adilabad.
More than 69,000 employees are participating in the general strike in the mines spread across 4 districts - Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal and Khammam.
The strike is likely to hit production of 60,000 tonnes, causing a loss of about Rs. 30 crore per day, besides affecting thermal power production.
The employees staged dharnas, rasta rokos, in front of their offices, and pressed for the introduction of a Telangana Bill in Parliament.
Singareni JAC leaders and employees said that coal production in the all the collieries would be halted due to the general strike.
The employees said that the strike would paralyse power projects - including Ramagundam Thermal Power Project in Karimnagar, which gets coal from Singareni Collieries. (INN)
