Despite several efforts on the part of the Telangana government,
seen as inadequate by the state's High Court, Covid-19 has been spreading in the state at an alarmingly rapid rate.
A bulletin released by the state's health department said that after 1,22,143 persons were tested across Telangana yesterday, 5,926 persons tested positive. The state now has 42,853 active cases.
The GHMC remains a major hotspot and recorded 793 positives. Further, districts that reported a high number of new cases include Medchal-Malkajgiri which reported 488 cases, Nizamabad which reported 444, Rangareddy which reported 455, Adilabad which reported 105, Bhadradri Kothagudem which reported 113, Jagtial which reported 205, Kamareddy which reported 262, Karimnagar which reported 168, Khammam which reported 247, Mahabubnagar which reported 195, Mancherial which reported 188, Medak which reported 124, Nagarkurnool which reported 149, Nalgonda which reported 144, Nirmal which reported 167, Peddapalli which reported 96, Rajanna Siricilla which reported 116, Sangareddy which reported 184, Siddipet which reported 167, Suryapet which reported 121, Warangal Rural which reported 103, Warangal Urban which reported 208, and Bhongir which reported 117. Also, Vikarabad and Wanaparthy reported 129 new cases each.
The bulletin also said that the state saw eighteen Covid-19 fatalities yesterday, taking the state's death tally to 1,856. This translates to a fatality rate of 0.51%.
On a happier note, the bulletin revealed that 2,209 recoveries had been recorded yesterday.
The sharp increase in both case numbers and mortality figures has finally prompted the state government to impose a night curfew from today till May 1. According to the curfew orders, all offices, shops, pubs, restaurants, hotels and other public places will have to close at 8:00 pm every evening from today till May 1.
Some offices, including government ones, and some essential and emergency services have been exempted from following the curfew.
The curfew will be enforced between 9:00 pm and 5:00 am.
