The stage is set for the invitation of fresh tenders for the establishment of liquor shops across Telangana.
The authorities of the excise department of the state are planning to issue the tender notification after the declaration of the results of the Huzurabad by-election on November 2.
The term of the licenses of the existing wine shops should have expired by the end of October (licences are granted for a period of two years), but the excise department extended the licenses till the end of November 2021 keeping in view the imposition of Covid lockdowns.
The new excise policy will come into force from December this year, and the authorities are in the process of finalising its terms and conditions.
The excise department had issued licenses to 2,216 wine shops under the current policy. They are planning to increase the total number of wine shops by 10% now
The new policy also aims to fix the issues regarding the provision of reservations to the BC, SC and ST communities in the last policy. Some businessmen from Khammam had challenged the method of reservations in the current policy in the high court, and the state government has not yet filed its counter in the case. The authorities are planning to avoid any such legal hurdles in the upcoming new excise policy.
