The Telangana government on Sunday launched the Nethanna Ku Bima scheme, which extends insurance coverage to handloom and powerloom weavers in Telangana.
Minister K T Rama Rao virtually launched the scheme on the occasion of National Handloom Day.
Speaking on the occasion, KTR appealed to the union government to withdraw GST on handlooms as it was casting an adverse impact on the weavers and the entire sector.
Alleging that the current NDA government was the first to levy GST on handlooms after 75 years of Independence, the minister said that the union government should withdraw its decision in the best interests of weavers across the country, and announce incentives to encourage the weaver community.
The Telangana government has introduced the Nethanna Ku Bima scheme on par with Rythu Bima scheme in a bid to instill confidence among the weavers.
The scheme, which was being implemented in association with LIC, would benefit 80,000 handloom and powerloom weavers in the State, the minister said.
In case of natural or accidental death of a weaver, Rs 5 lakh would be deposited into the nominees' account within 10 days, KTR said.
