Scores of farmers across several districts of Telangana took to the streets on Friday in protest against Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, accusing him of going back on his promise of waiving off farm loans up to Rs. 1 lakh.
Farmers organised "rasta rokos" at several places in Nizambad, Medak and Karimnagar districts. KCR's effigy was also burnt at several places in the new State.
The farmers are demanding that the government waive off farm loans up to Rs. 1 lakh without any pre-conditions.
They said that the TRS did not mention any rider when it made the promise in its manifesto in the recent elections. However, KCR diluted his promise after getting elected and announced that only farm loans up to Rs 1 lakh taken during 2013-14 would be waived off, they alleged.
Protests were organised in Timmangar, Jukkal and Balakonda of Nizambad district. Similar protests were also reported from Dachepally of Karimnagar district.
Meanwhile, a farmer from KCR's native Medak district committed suicide allegedly due to the pre-conditions laid by the new government. The deceased, Dattatreyya, took the extreme step at his residence in Kasipur of Zaheerabad mandal. He took about Rs 90,000 loan in the last 2 years against his farm land of about 2 acres. (INN)
