The Telangana police today stopped a delegation of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) from visiting the Dummugudem irrigation project.
The delegation was stopped at the K K Function Hall of Bhadrachalam town. Local ACP Rohit told the delegation that they did not have permission to visit the project, and when the delegation asked the police why they were not allowed to visit the project, were told that there was a Maoist problem in the area.
Angered at this, CLP leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka condemned the decision of the police, and spoke to the higher officials of the government urging them to allow them to visit the project.
When that didn't happen, enraged over the attitude of the police, scores of the Congress workers along with the CLP delegation staged a protest, with the party MLAs and MLCs too raising slogans against the State government along with the other workers.
Party MLA D Sridhar Babu said that they had informed the police about their visit a week in advance, and wondered why the police did not make the necessary security arrangements. He said that the obstruction of their visit by the police citing a Maoist problem was a classic example of the failure and inefficiency of the State government. He also alleged that the State government did not allow the delegation to visit the project as it was scared that the defects of the project would be exposed following the visit of the delegation.
