A delegation of Telangana Congress leaders on Thursday visited the house of dead farmer B Limbaiah in the Ramareddy village under the Sadashivnagar mandal of the Nizamabad district and extended financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh.
Limbaiah had committed suicide by hanging himself near the Katta Maisamma temple at Lower Tank Bund on Wednesday.
The Congress leaders, led by the Leader of the Opposition in the Telangana Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, handed over Rs 1 lakh to the family members of the deceased on behalf of Nalgonda Congress MLA Komatireddy Venkatareddy's foundation.
Former minister Sudarshan Reddy, former MP and AICC spokesperson Madhu Yashki Goud, former government whip Anil, former MLA Gangaram, Municipal Chairman Sushma, senior leader Surender Nallamadugu, and others including ZPTC and MPTC members, were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, Shabbir Ali said that despite repeated demands by the Congress for the last one month, the TRS government had not only neglected the issue of farmers' suicides, but also failed to respond to Congress plea for a special session of the Assembly on the issue.
He said that all parties should now speak only on the farmers' issues without indulging in politics. Telangana was at the top in terms of farmers' suicides, and this needed to be remedied, he added.
The Congress leader demanded that the state government revise the GO 421, issued by the then Congress government in June 2004, to increase the compensation amount for the families of deceased farmers from the present Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs. 5 lakhs.
Further, the government should immediately waive off the remaining half of the crop loans, and take steps to provide fresh loans to farmers, he added.
