The Telangana bandh today was total and largely peaceful, save for some violence and tension at the Osmania University, Hyderabad. 31 companies of paramilitary forces were deployed in Hyderabad to take care of the law and order in the city.
The Osmania University campus erupted into violence after suspended TDP leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy tried to enter the campus with a huge crowd but was stopped by the police.
Nagam picked a fight with the police there, who said his gathering could not be allowed as it would violate Section 144 that was being enforeced in the city.
The police arrested him when he did not back off, and Nagam was taken to the Vidyanagar police station.
Following this arrest, the youth there went on a rampage, and had to be controlled by tear gas shells fired at them by the police.
Naturally, the Telangana community has taken offence to the "heinous" act: lawyers from the Nampally court went to the State Human Rights Commission questioning the deployment of paramilitary forces in the OU campus. The lawyers also staged protests outside the court.
The HRC has now questioned the DGP V Dinesh Reddy about the presence of these forces, and has asked for a report on the Osmania University incident by 6 July.
