A horrifying double murder that took place today has left Telangana stunned. An advocate couple, Vaman Rao and Nagamani, were hacked to death by two unknown assailants in Peddapalli district, this afternoon.
The couple, both advocates at the Telangana High Court, were fatally attacked with a sickle in their car in broad daylight, while they were travelling from Manthani to Hyderabad. The attack took place after their car was reportedly intercepted by the assailants who were waiting at the Kalavacharla petrol pump.
Although passers-by immediately called an ambulance, Vaman Rao, stabbed three times, passed away while he was being shifted to a hospital, and Nagamani, who had sustained two injuries, died on the spot.
Many suspect that the murder, likely the result of an old enmity, was a premeditated one as the two victims, known for their philanthropic ways, were also known to have made many powerful enemies by filing PILs on various important issues.
They had reportedly even received many threatening phone calls in the past, which had prompted them to seek police protection.
Reports also suggest a person named Kunta Srinivas may have been involved in the dastardly double-homicide - Vaman Rao had mentioned his name to a passer-by after the attack.
The killings elicited a strong response from the state's Bar Association and various other advocates' outfits. They condemned the incident, and demanded that immediate steps be taken not only to punish the culprits but also to protect the lawyer community in the state from such attacks.
The police are currently investigating the matter, and have set up check posts in an effort to apprehend the assailants. Police officials said that six teams had been formed to locate the attackers, and that the relevant CCTV footage was also being examined
