A delegation of Telugu Desam Party leaders on Monday met Chief Minister K Rosaiah and submitted a memorandum demanding that the state government take immediate steps and get the centre to stop works on the Babli Project immediately.
Talking to media persons after submitting the memorandum, senior TDP leader Eraballi Dayakar Rao said that this is the 'final conflict' for the TDP as far as the Babli Project is concerned. He said that another delegation would leave for New Delhi on Tuesday and meet officials of the Central Water Commission.
Dayakar Rao said that this delegation would also meet the Union Minister for Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal and raise the issue before him.
The TDP leader said that his party leaders would then sit on a dharna in New Delhi till the Babli Project is stopped.
Dayakar Rao said that waters to the Telangana region would dry up if the Maharashtra government does not stop works on the 12 illegal projects under the Babli Project across the Godavari and that the Sriramsagar Project would go in waste if immediate action is not taken.
According to the TDP, ayacut of 18 lakh acres in Nizamabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Adilabad, Nalgonda and Khammam districts would be affected by the completion of the Babli Project.
The senior TDP leader said that the Maharashtra government is planning to 'siphon off' 167 TMC of water from the river Godavari.
The Maharashtra government claims that the crest gates erected as part of the Babli Project will only utilise 8.7 TMC of water used for supplying drinking water to the state.
The TDP delegation consisted of Dayakar Rao, Nama Nageswar Rao, M Narasimhulu, Kadiam Srihari and Mandava Venkateswara Rao.
