The 21st National Council meeting of the Communist Party Of India, held at Patna, on Saturday, unanimously elected Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy of Andhra Pradesh as the party's General Secretary. Suravaram replaces present incumbent A B Bardhan.
Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy is the first leader from Andhra Pradesh to have been elected to a top post at a national level, after a gap of 24 years. He wil continue in the post for 4 years.
Born in Mahabubnagar district on 25 March 1942, he was known to have participated in agitations since his school days in Kurnool. He completed his LLB from Osmania University.
He was the general secretary of AISF twice - in 1966 and 1969 - and president in 1970.
Suravaram was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Nalgonda constituency in 1998 and 2004.
He was assistant secretary of the CPI from 1995-97, secretary of the state council from 1997-2005, and is currently working as deputy general secretary. (INN)
