The Supreme Court will today deliver its verdict on whether or not the contentious Maharashtrian irrigation project, Babli Dam, will be allowed to stand.
The Babli Dam, which is being built on the Godavari at the AP-MH border, is said to be being constructed illegally on the same site as Sriramsagar project planned by AP. Also, Babli's strategic position means that it can siphon away 65 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water that would otherwise go towards irrigating five water-starved districts in the Telangana region of AP.
Hence, the state government has been pushing for the
demolition of Babli Dam for about three years now.
The verdict by the Supreme Court will decide the fate of the Sriram Sagar project.
