The Supreme Court has ruled that the elections take place in the context of the 2001 census, with the previously applicable reservations of over 60%, of which 34% is for BCs.
The Supreme Court has ordered local bodies in the state - including jilla parishads, mandal parishads, municipalities, municipal corporations, gram panchayats etc. - to go ahead with their elections, and wrap it up within 3 months.
These elections had not taken place since 2006 due to an issue with reservations for the backward classes. Since those elections, the high court had ordered that no local body elections take place with reservatons of more than 50%. However, this ruling was challenged by the government, as the previous elections were carried out with reservations of over 60%.
The Supreme Court is now allowing the elections to take place in the context of the 2001 census, with the earlier reservations of over 60%, of which 34% is for BCs.
Meanwhile, TDP MLC Rajendra Prasad welcomes the decision by the Supreme Court, and has expressed the hope that these elections will provide a boost to the stagnating development in the rural areas of Hyderabad.
