The Telangana High Court today declined to grant stay orders on the panchayat elections in the State.
Several BC organisations, including the Madiwala Machadeva Rajakula Sangham and the Telangana Pradesh Gangaputra Sangham, filed separate petitions challenging the State government's GO Ms No 46, which provides reservations for BCs, SCs and STs within a 50% cap. They sought a temporary halt to the election process.
During the proceedings, the Bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G M Mohiuddin refused to issue stay orders, and said that the election notification had already been published.
The Bench told the petitioners that the court could not intervene once the election notification was issued.
The Court also asked whether the petitioners were seeking cancellation of the elections due to the government not announcing sub-category reservations.
The Court directed the State government to file a counter on the complaint over sub-category reservations within six weeks. According to reports, the next hearing is scheduled for eight weeks later.
