As a part of the International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3, the GHMC is planning a big awareness campaign in Hyderabad.
Special drives would be launched against the usage of plastic bags as people were throwing plastic waste in nalas, lakes etc. blocking them, due to which the mosquito menace was also increasing, said GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy.
To curb both the menaces, an action plan had been prepared keeping in view the rainy season, he said.
In this connection the Commissioner said that he had held a review meeting with the officials of the entomology, transport and urban health wings at the GHMC head office today which Additional Commissioners Sikta Patnaik and Bhaskara Chary, the Hyderabad DEO, the city school managements and others attended.
While addressing the officials, Reddy said that the help of about 10 lakh students studying in private schools would be taken to create awareness, and to highlight the ill-effects of plastic waste and the health hazards due to the mosquito menace.
The Commissioner also directed the officials to involve 45,000 SHGs where 4.5 lakh women were available, in the campaign.
