The South Central Railway has set up new mechanized laundries at Secunderabad and Kacheguda, to supply linen (bedrolls) to rail passengers during travel.
The laundries have a capacity of one ton each, and can currently meet 20% of the daily requirement of bedrolls (i.e., a supply of 5,000 bedroll sets while the requirement is 25,000 sets of bedrolls each day).
According to the SCR, the mechanized laundries have resulted in a highly satisfied train passneger clientele.
The South Central Railway is planning the expansion of mechanized laundries by setting up 4 more plants, at Kakinada, Tirupati, Vijayawada and Kacheguda (one more in addition to the existing plant). These laundries, which are intended to handle 100% of the linen on SCR, will be run on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) method. (INN)
