GHMC Mayor Mohammad Majid Hussain directs the officials of MEPMA to undertake improvement of infrastructure facilities in slums on a priority basis.
GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain has directed the officials of MEPMA (Mission for Eliminating Poverty In Municipal Areas) to take up development of infrastructure and housing in Athapur, Shivarampally, Addagutta and Ismail Nagar slums on a priority basis.
The Mayor, along with MEPMA Mission Director Anita Ramchandran and other officials, held a review meeting to take stock of housing, infrastructure and basic amenities for the development of slums in the GHMC limits. The meeting took place on Tuesday in the CM's chambers.
The Mayor said that apart from the already-mentioned slums, others, like Narsimha Basthi, Ambedkar Nagar, IDH Colony, New Indira Nagar and Kapra, should also be put under survey.
Majid Hussain desired to involve self-help groups and to take their consent, for infrastructure and housing facilities, and also during mapping while preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
He also directed the officials to start the process of notifying slums which have been non-notified so far. Dr. Rayanna, Regional Coordinator for Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY), opined that there is a need to de-notify slums which have already been developed.
To this end, the Mayor desired to gather infrastructure information on slums, so as to get the list of slums which need de-notification.
Dr. Rayanna said that the government of India has given instructions to form city-level technical cells, with 6 people from the fields of Engineering, Town Planning, GIS, MIS, and Community Coordination, under the Rajiv Awas Yojana scheme, so that the development of slums can be taken up on priority basis without any hindrance.
Reacting to the suggestion, Anita Ramchandran, Mission Director, MEPMA, said that proposals for the recruitment of professionals for the improvement of slums have already been sent to the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI). (INN)
