Hyderabad | 2nd December 2014
GHMC Mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain expressed satisfaction over the performance of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation during his 3-year tenure as the Mayor.
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, the Mayor said that the GHMC was in a deficit of Rs 400 crores when he had taken over as the Mayor. However, this year, the GHMC's Property Tax revenues crossed Rs 1,000 crores, and they were expected to cross Rs 1,500 crores the next year.
He said that the introduction of subsidised meals of Rs 5 each and e-governance were some of the major achievements.
Majid Hussain said that all GHMC corporators, irrespective of their party affiliations, and officials had worked as a team together to develop Hyderabad.
However, he said that a few tasks remained unaccomplished. For instance, he said that the nalas work could not be completed due to a shortage of funds.
He informed that the GHMC did not get Rs 1,000 crores under the 13th Finance Commission due to non-conduct of local body elections. However, the GHMC had spent Rs 250 crores for the modernisation of the nalas in its limits.
He also said that the GHMC corporators had developed the peripheral areas with funds of Rs 10-12 crores.
The Mayor said that the GHMC could not implement two major decisions. The innovative scheme of breakfast for Rs 1, and waiving off of Property Tax to some beneficiaries could not be implemented due to non-conduct of the GHMC General Body meeting, he said.
However, he hoped that the State Government would waive off the Property Tax as proposed by the present GHMC. He said that the MIM MLAs would do a follow-up and ensure that the Property Tax waiver move got implemented. (INN)
