SSI and Textiles Minister P Shankar Rao on Tuesday warned the police force that he will seek legal recourse if it provokes innocent students and files false cases against them.
"This issue should be given a serious thought," Dr. Shankar Rao said. The minister categorically stated that he was against lathi-charge on students, advocates and even Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and JAC leaders.
He told mediapersons at the Secretariat on Tuesday that he was against such a practice where the police first instigates the student and then foists false cases when the students react to the instigation.
Dr. Shankar Rao's concern for the students came in the wake of the recent attacks by police on students protesting for separate Telangana, particularly in the Osmania University campus area.
Fielding a comment that the Congress is blocking the Telangana issue, the minister clarified that the party, too, is working for a separate Telangana, and that there was some good news ahead.
Lashing out at the Sakshi Group of Publications, which allegedly has shown the minister and his family in poor light, Dr. Shankar Rao warned that he would file a defamation case against the management if they did not tender an unconditional apology within 48 hours. Stating that it was condemnable, the minister advised Kadapa leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy to mend his ways, and not to lend his ears to the sycophants who surround him.
Reacting to K T Rama Rao's alleged remarks against the Congress President Sonia Gandhi's family, the minister questioned the former's contribution to society. He demanded that Jaganmohan Reddy withdraw his remarks against Sonia Gandhi, and tender an unconditional apology to the nation.
