The Leader of the Opposition in the Telangana Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir has condemned the TRS government for not extending the promised 12% quota for Muslims in the ongoing recruitment drive.
In a statement on Sunday, Shabbir Ali said that by extending the term of the Sudhir Commission of Inquiry till March 31, 2016, the TRS government had found an excuse to delay the implementation of the promise of providing 12% reservation for Muslims in jobs and education.
He also contended that the Sudhir Commission had no legal sanctity and that it was not empowered to recommend any reservation, and demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao directly constitute a Backward Classes Commission to implement his promise.
The Sudhir Commission could provide only the latest statistics related to Muslim backwardness, and the State government could provide the reservation only through a BC Commission, he said.
Shabbir Ali said that the previous Congress government had already set the precedent of giving Muslim reservation. It had directly issued a GO giving 5% reservation for Muslims. Upon the High Court's direction, a BC Commission had been constituted and its report was obtained in six months, and based on it, without wasting any time, 4% reservation was given to Muslims in jobs and education, he said.
Although the continuation of the 4% reservation was subject to the final judgment of Supreme Court, it was being implemented for the last 11 years, he said, reiterating that the TRS government should constitute a BC Commission to provide 12% reservation to Muslims.
