Seemandhra Electricity Employees Call Off Strike

Seemandhra Electricity Employees JAC agrees to call off strike temporarily, in view of cyclone.
Hyderabad | 10th October 2013
The Seemandhra Electricity Employees JAC has agreed to call off their strike temporarily in view of a cyclone that is scheduled to hit the North-Andhra region soon.

The decision was taken during the talks held by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at the state Secretariat here on Thursday. The Chief Minister appealed to the JAC to end the strike as the cyclone would worsen the power situation across the state if the employees remain on strike. Convinced by the Chief Minister's argument, the JAC has decided to call off the strike temporarily.

All employees - including 30,000 permanent and 15,000 contract workers working in the power generation and transmission divisions in Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra regions would resume duties from 6am on Friday.

It may be mentioned that the electricity employees had worsened the power supply situation not only in 13 districts of Seemandhra, but across the state. While several districts had no supply, the state capital too has been forced to face daily power cuts for more than 3 hours, everyday. Emergency services including hospitals, railways and airports too have been affected.

The electricity department employees went on strike in protest against the Centre's decision to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh to carve out Telangana. (INN)
