Reports are swirling that tennis star Sania Mirza may soon enter the political arena as part of the Congress.
Speculations are doing the rounds that Mirza is planning to contest for the Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat as the Congress candidate.
According to sources, the Congress leadership is exploring various options to field a strong contender against AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi. As part of that, the party's leaders have reportedly consulted her with the proposal.
However, no official statement has been issued from Sania Mirza and her family members in this regard.
The Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency is the stronghold of AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi, who has been winning the seat since 2004. The party leadership believes that she can seize on the anti-incumbency against the MP and pose a challenge.
The BJP has already announced the name of Madhavi Latha as its candidate. Latha is a local, having grown up in the Yakutpura area of Hyderabad and gained popularity with her work among the people of the Old City, including in the Muslim community.
Mirza, who made the country famous at the international level, was previously the Ambassador of Telangana. In addition, her younger sister Anam Mirza is the daughter-in-law of the former captain of the Indian cricket team and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin. Anam Mirza got married to Azharuddin's son Mohammad Asaduddin in 2019. Azharuddin, who is also a leader of the Congress, contested for the Jubilee Hills seat in the recent Telangana Assembly elections and lost. Azharuddin appears to have mentioned Sania Mirza's candidature to Congress leaders in the context of the Lok Sabha elections.
Sania Mirza has recently divorced from her husband Shoaib Malik, and is focusing on her son and the development of her tennis academy.
