The Telangana High Court today asked the state government to take steps for the conservation of the
UNESCO-recognised Ramappa temple in Mulugu district.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Hima Kohli and Justice B Vijaysen Reddy issued these directions while dealing with a suo moto petition on the state of the temple which was based on news reports published in different media publications.
The bench said that it was a matter of pride for the entire state that the 13th century structure had been included in the list of the UNESCO's world heritage sites.
Kohli and Reddy then asked the TRS government to devise and implement a "comprehensive conservation program" before the December deadline fixed by the UNESCO for the restoration of the temple.
They also directed the government to constitute a committee comprising members from the Archaeological Survey of India and the state archaeology department, and the Mulugu collector. The committee, it was specified, would need to hold a meeting on August 4 to discuss the restoration and conservation plan.
The HC later adjourned the hearing of the case till August 25, after asking the government to submit a report of the committee's meeting within the next four weeks.
