In a novel protest against the rising prices of essential commodities in the country, Bharatiya Janata Party leader M Venkaiah Naidu gifted onions to women who tied rakhis to him on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, in Hyderabad, on Wednesday.
This was at the Raksha Bandha celebrations held at the state BJP headquarters in Nampally today. Talking to reporters later, he blamed the Congress-led UPA government for the rising inflation.
He said that essential and food commodities have become so expensive that soon they would be used as gifts and not as consumables.
It may be mentioned here that the prices of onions have touched their peak, and were sold at Rs. 80 per kg last week. Even though prices came down in certain cities, the commodity is still being sold at Rs. 60 per kg in several cities and towns across India.
The rising prices have added another weapon into the arsenal of opposition parties who are targeting the government.
The BJP leader said that the Congress policies have pushed the country into a severe economic crisis while increasing the burden on the common man. (INN)
