Leaders of the People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) lashed out against top Vijayawada police official P Sitaramanjaneyulu and the state government, for the alleged fake encounters of 'Azad' and journalist Hemchandra Pandey.
PUCL leaders, including its president Keshava Rao Jadav and general secretary Jaya Vidyalaya, met home minister P Sabitha Indra Reddy and handed over a memorandum to her recalling the circumstances under which the 2 were slain.
They particularly found fault with P Sitaramanjaneyulu, who, they alleged, was responsible for the fake 'encounter' to eliminate the two. This, they pointed out, came in for severe criticism from the apex court as well.
The PUCL leaders also pointed out that the Supreme Court was quite specific in assailing the Centre for the arbitrary killing.
Reminding the home minister of the court's
comments that under a democratic set-up the government does not slay its own children, the PUCL said that the observation would be brought to the notice of the Human Rights Commission.
The fact that the apex court reacted to the 'killing' should be an eye-opener to the government, they said. They also said that the government should proceed to take action against the culprits responsible for the "fake" encounter.
The PUCL leaders also emphatically called for stern action against the Sitaramanjaneyulu, and urged the government to recall him along with the action-taken report.
