The Rajya Sabha MP asks how the state government could go ahead with the tender process of the Polavaram project when the Environment ministry has cancelled the clearances accorded to it.
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Palvai Govardhan Reddy, on Saturday, demanded a high-level probe into the alleged irregularities in the executions of works on the Polavaram project.
Talking to reporters at the Congress Legislature Party office, Palvai questioned as to how the state government could go ahead with the tender process of the Polavaram project and release funds when the union Environment ministry has cancelled the clearances accorded to it.
Suspecting that chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy was being misled by some chief engineers, he demanded a thorough probe into the alleged irregularities. He said also said that certain vested elements in the government were interested in receiving kickbacks by pushing the project against norms.
Palvai said that if the state government fails to act on the issue, he would approach the High Court, seeking a CBI probe into the irregularities.
Further, the Rajya Sabha MP reiterated that the project was detrimental to the interests of the Telangana region. He said that as per the norm, the Telangana region ought to get 600 TMC of water, and a major share of electricity. However, only 45 TMC of water is being given to the region, he complained.
Stating that the people of Telangana must not be treated as "beggars", he demanded that the chief minister convene a round table conference on the issue to discuss it. (INN)
