The Congress High Command seeks to restore some semblance of order in the state's Congress party, and to enable the party to establish a stronghold in the Telangana region, with the appointment of an appropriate Pradesh Congress Commitee (PCC) chief.
Congress General Secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad had reportedly set forth Transport Minister Botsa Satyanarayana as the apt PCC chief, while Chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy is lobbying for Civil Supplies Minister D Sridhar Babu.
The CM is reported to have listed Sridhar's fluent English among the reasons for choosing the civil supplies minister over Botsa. That Babu is from Telangana, KKR said, qualifies him for the role of the PCC chief.
With Azad and the CM lobbying for their respective candidates, Housing Minister Kanna Lakshminarayana flew to New Delhi on Wednesday to try and clinch the position of the PCC chief.
According to sources, Kanna's candidature was considered by the High Command, and this was stiffly opposed by the Housing Minister's arch rival Rayapati Sambasiva Rao.
Sonia Gandhi is expected to take the final call on the key posts in the state's Congress party after the completion of her Shimla tour.
