BRS working president K T Rama Rao today issued a legal notice to Union minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar over what he described as "baseless and defamatory" remarks against him (KTR) related to the alleged phone-tapping controversy.
The notice, sent through KTR's legal counsel, refers to statements made by Sanjay during a press conference on August 8, which KTR claims were false, irresponsible, and intended to damage his reputation.
The counsel emphasised that none of the allegations made on August 8 was supported by proof, and accused the Union Minister of abusing his position to launch personal attacks.
The notice said that making phone-tapping accusations without evidence was unbecoming of a Union minister and Member of Parliament, and amounted to a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of another elected representative.
The notice demands an unconditional public apology from Sanjay to KTR and KTR's family, and an assurance that no further direct or indirect defamatory statements will be made.
It warns Sanjay that failure to comply within seven days would lead to civil and criminal legal action, holding Sanjay fully liable for damages.
In a statement, KTR's legal team accused Sanjay of repeatedly making unfounded allegations for political mileage and media attention. They said that KTR, who had served in various ministerial roles since Telangana's formation, had an unblemished record of public service, and that such defamatory propaganda was causing serious harm to his reputation.
They cautioned that any further "wild, false and malicious" statements would invite stricter legal consequences under the law.
