The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the central and state governments to file replies within 3 weeks over the objections raised by Orissa government on Polavaram irrigation project, and adjourned the hearing for 8 weeks.
Disposing off a petition filed by the Orissa government challenging the centre's decision to give final environmental clearance to the project, the Apex Court directed the Orissa government to submit its counter petition within 5 weeks.
Orissa had, in its petition, sought a declaration that Andhra Pradesh had no right or entitlement to undertake or proceed with the Polavaram project on river Godavari. It has also stated that embankments were not permanent solutions to effectively contain submergence during floods.
The Orissa government also questioned the centre's move to consider the plea of a national project status for Polavaram irrigation project.
The neighbouring state has also demanded conduct of public hearings in Orissa and Chhattisgarh, and briefing the court over the steps taken by Andhra Pradesh government to prevent submergence of villages in the 2 states.
