The Telangana government today withdrew its writ petition in the Supreme Court concerning the Polavaram - Nallamala Sagar irrigation project, following the court's suggestion to approach it through a civil suit under Article 131 of the Constitution.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi appeared on behalf of the Telangana government before the apex court.
Speaking to the media after the hearing, Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the Chief Justice of India had advised the State to refile the case under Article 131, prompting the withdrawal of the petition.
Reddy reiterated Telangana's objections, alleging that Andhra Pradesh was attempting to utilise water beyond its allocated 484.5 TMC. He said that Andhra Pradesh was proceeding with project modifications without approvals from the Godavari and Krishna River Management Boards and the Apex Council, and that the stop-work order was not being followed. Telangana opposed any changes beyond the original design of the Polavaram project, he added.
