A team of foreign experts visited the Polavaram Project for the second consecutive day today to review key construction and soil stabilisation works.
The delegation comprised international experts Sean Hinchberger, David B Paul and Gianfranco De Cicco, and senior officials from the Union Ministry of Water Resources.
On the second day of the inspection, the experts examined the soil stabilisation works at Gap-1 of the main dam. They assessed the strength and stability of the soil by excavating portions of the already compacted area and physically entering the pits to evaluate the level of consolidation.
At another location, the team observed the placement of embankment soil and the techniques used to strengthen it. The degree of compaction achieved after rolling the soil with heavy rollers was also closely monitored.
Earlier in the day, the foreign experts held detailed discussions with officials from the Central and State water resources departments, and representatives of the construction agency, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL). During the meeting, clarifications were provided on the observations and queries raised by the experts during the first day's field inspection. Detailed deliberations were also held on the design and configuration of Gap-2.
State Water Resources Department Advisor M Venkateswara Rao, Engineer-in-Chief K Narasimha Murthy, Polavaram Project Superintending Engineer R Ramachandra Rao, MEIL General Manager A Gangadhar, MEIL Deputy General Manager Murali Pammi and other officials presented detailed explanations to the international experts and the Union government officials.
The expert team reviewed these inputs along with data independently collected during the field inspections.
