A special CBI court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on former Director of Mines and Geology Department VD Rajagopal's bail petition to Wednesday.
Rajagopal is the third accused in the Obulapuram Mining Corporation(OMC) illegal mining case.
During the hearing, Rajagopal's counsel appealed to the court to grant bail to his client along the lines of former IAS officer Srilakshmi's bail, who is also accused of involvement in the same mining scam.
He maintained that Rajagopal was not involved in any irregularities, and that his client had no powers to lease mines.
The CBI's counsel counter-argued that accepting Rajgopal's bail plea at this juncture might adversely affect the investigation as he might influence witnesses and tamper with evidence. The CBI said that it would prove true all the charges levied against Rajagopal with substantial evidence.
The CBI further stated that it would file a revision petition in the High Court seeking the cancellation of the bail sanctioned to IAS officer Srilakshmi. The agency has not given a clean chit to Srilakshmi, the counsel clarified.
The CBI also said that it would file a chargesheet in the OMC case in the Supreme Court by Dec 28, and that it would appeal to the court to set up a special court to deal with this mining scam case. (INN)
