BJP senior leader Gudur Narayana Reddy on Sunday expressed deep concern over the security breach at the residence of senior IAS officer Smita Sabharwal, involving Deputy Tahsildar in Medchal-Malkajgiri district Anand Reddy entering the house of the officer late on Saturday night.
Reddy said that the intrusion of a person into the residence of the officer late into the night exposed the lacunae in the security for women in the state.
"If a person can enter without fear into the house of a senior IAS officer who is also the wife of a senior IPS officer, it just shows the state of the security situation in the entire State, and also raises questions about the safety of the common women in the State," he said.
He also pointed out that the officer was working right in the office of the Chief Minister. "How then can the CM guarantee the safety of the women in the rest of the state?" he asked.
He also said that the incident showed the lack of governance in the state. He claimed that there was no review on crimes against women though at least one case was being reported every day.
He said that according to the reports being produced by the Telangana Police, crimes against women in Telangana had increased 3.8% in 2022.
He said that about 17,908 cases had been registered during 2022 as against the 17,253 cases in 2021.
In Greater Hyderabad the number of crimes against women had increased to 7,578 in 2022 from 7,459 in 2021, he added.
The BJP leader said that these figures suggested that the atrocities and crimes against women were not abating even though the Telangana government claimed that it had given paramount importance to women security. Many women were kidnapped, raped and murdered every year, he lamented. Though the Disha case had put a lot of focus on crimes against women, there was no improvement, he claimed.
