Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that the new Rs. 500 currency notes were now in circulation and available at 22,500 ATMs across the nation.
There are roughly two lakh ATM machines in the country. Due to technical slags, most ATMs were yet to be calibrated, Jaitley said.
As per Jaitley, the latest software has been uploaded in 22,500 ATMs as of November 17, so as to recognize the new Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000 bills.
Expressing anguish over the difficulties being faced by common people after the demonetization, he said that the Union government would make important affairs such as marriages hassle-free by allowing one member of each family withdraw Rs 2.50 lakhs, he said.
The Union Minister also said that in an attempt to keep an eye on illegal wealth, the Centre has decided to reduce the amount of exchangeable old notes from Rs. 4,500 to Rs. 2,000.
However Jaitley said that there was no plan to reintroduce the Rs. 1,000 currency note.
