After Konijeti Rosaiah stepped down on Wednesday from the post of AP's CM, citing ill-health, advanced age and work pressure, the Congress chose Assembly Speaker Nallari Kiran Kumar Reddy as the new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.
Reddy (50) was a former Ranji Trophy player, and has been Speaker of the Assembly since 2009. He hails from Chittoor district in Rayalaseema.
The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) had met on Wednesday night, and the meeting included Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony, M Veerappa Moily and Ghulam Nabui Azad. The CLP had unanimously passed a resolution authorizing Sonia Gandhi to name the new CLP leader, and shortly after 10pm, Kiran Kumar Reddy's name was announced as the new CLP leader.
