Train services in the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul division were affected by the landslides caused due to incessant rains in the region on Sunday.
According to East Coast Railway sources, landslides triggered off as rains disrupted train traffic on the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul route, with boulders and mud sliding on to the tracks. Following the landslide, Visakhapatnam-Kirandul Passenger was halted between the Chimidipalli - Borra Caves station. The train starts from Visakhapatnam at 7am.
Relief and rescue operation teams have been pressed into service from the Visakhapatnam railway division, to clear the tracks by removing the earth and boulders.
Rescue officials said the track would be restored within 3 hours, and train services would be restored by afternoon.
Meanwhile, Visakhapatnam district experienced heavy rains since the early hours of Saturday, following the north-eastern monsoon.
Weather officials said that the northeast monsoon was vigorous, and that coastal Andhra Pradesh will experience widespread rain or thundershowers, with some places receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall during the next 48 hours.
The officials alerted fishermen not to venture into sea, as strong surface winds from north-easterly direction with speed reaching 45 to 50 km per hour are likely along and off coastal Andhra Pradesh.
