Salient features of the Railway Manufacturing Unit, Kazipet
Initially, a Wagon Repair Workshop was sanctioned for Kazipet to undertake periodic overhauling of 200 wagons per month. Later on, considering various factors such as the enhanced requirement of wagons by the Indian Railways, the regular demand for establishing a manufacturing unit in the area to promote local industry and the opportunities for employment generation and socio-economic development of the people in the region, the wagon repair workshop was upgraded to a Railway Manufacturing Unit with an estimated cost of Rs 521 crore.
The unit is expected to produce 1,200 wagons in the first year - i. e. 100 wagons per month. Subsequently, the manufacturing capacity is likely to be increased to 2,400 wagons per year.
The unit is expected to spur the industrial development eco-system in the Hanumakonda region, and to play an important role in the socio-economic progress of the people in the region.
