MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi on Friday demanded that the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad be named after Hazrath Baba Sharfuddin, a Muslim saint who lived there.
Participating in the discussion on the issue in the Telangana State Legislative Assembly, Owaisi claimed that the airport had been established on 3,000 acres of Wakf land belonging to Dargah Hazrath Baba Sharfuddin.
He said that the ownership dispute was still in court.
He said it would thus be ideal if the airport were named after Baba Sharfuddin.
The MIM leader strongly opposed the proposal made by some members to rename the airport after former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao. He said that the MIM would never allow the airport to be renamed after Narasimha Rao.
Similarly, he also objected to the renaming of the airport after former Chief Minister late N T Rama Rao.
Akbaruddin Owaisi advised the State Government to constitute a panel, comprising representatives of all major political parties, and take their views in case the Centre asked it to propose a new name.
He ridiculed the demand of some TDP leaders for renaming of airport terminal after NTR. He said that the people knew who betrayed NTR and was responsible for his death. (INN)
