Congress senior leader and former MLA M Kondada Reddy on Thursday expressed fears that any change in the design of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project would completely eliminate the identity of Public Gardens.
Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, Reddy strongly opposed the proposed change by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao to the Metro Rail route near the Assembly.
He said that if the Metro Rail were to be diverted to the rear of Jubilee Hall, it would completely eliminate Public Gardens from the map.
He said that former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao had already done damage to Bagh-e-Aaam (Public Gardens) by constructing the Lalitha Kala Thoranam and Telugu University during his tenure. The remaining parts of Public Gardens too would be lost if the Metro Rail's route map was modified, he said.
Kondada Reddy said that the government should take wise decisions to ensure that the heritage and the historical structures of Hyderabad remained intact.
He said that any lapses would led to extinction of the city's landmarks, and future generations would not be able to see the real Hyderabad that existed today.
He questioned why the Telangana Rashtra Samithi did not protest when L&T began works near Assembly and Sultan Bazaar.
He said that the TRS remained silent even when L&T erected pillars on the Assembly road over the last several months.
Reddy also demanded preservation of Falaknuma Palace, which he claimed was facing negligence by the authorities.
The Congress leader also alleged that 31 acres of heritage land at Raidurg was first sold to DLF and later re-purchased by APIIC, and was then allotted to Transco, SBH, the police department, Games City and Metro Rail. The land was finally sold to My Home, a real estate company.
He said that the government should clarify why the land went through the process of multiple re-sales. (INN)
