The process of selection of candidates for the ‘Maulana Azad National Fellowship For Minority Students’ has been finalised for the year 2009-10, while the process of selection for the current year would begin soon.
According to a statement by the Union Ministry Of Minority Affairs, 755 candidates have been selected for 756 scholarships.
The ‘Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minority Students’ is a scheme launched by the Ministry Of Minority Affairs during last financial year, for research studies leading to regular and full time M Phil and Ph D courses.
University Grants Commission (UGC) is the nodal agency for implementing this scheme and an amount of Rs. 14.90 crore has been alloted by the Ministry for award of fellowships during the year 2009-10.
The community-wise distribution of the fellowships granted for the year 2009-10 was also revealed. According the Ministry Of Minority Affairs, 539 Muslims, 101 Christians, 80 Sikhs, 34 Buddhists and one Parsi candidate have been selected for the scholarships.
The objective of the Scheme is to provide fellowships in the form of financial assistance to students from five notified minority communities including Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis.
UGC will select 756 candidates again for award of fellowships in 2010-11, advertisements for which would be released shortly. A provision of Rs. 30 crores has been made in the budget for this Scheme in the year 2010-11.
A list of selected candidates has been put online on the official website of the Ministry Of Minority Affairs and UGC.
