The Department of Posts has introduced a philately scholarship, Deen Dayal SPARSH Yojana (Scholarship for Promotion of Aptitude & Research in Stamps as a Hobby), for generating interest in philately amongst students.
Philately is the collection and study of postage stamps. 920 scholarships will be awarded per year, 40 per postal circle.
Students of classes VI to IX from recognized schools within India having good academic records and pursuing philately as a hobby are eligible for selection for the scholarship. Selected candidates should have scored at least 60% marks or equivalent grade / grade points in the most recent final examination that they have taken. There will be a 5% relaxation for students belonging to SCs and STs.
A Level-1 Screening Test (a philately written quiz) of one hour will be conducted on current affairs, history, geography, science, sports, culture, local philately & national philately for the eligible candidates, and selected students will be asked to submit a Philately Project Work (Level-2 of the selection process). The project work needs to be 4 to 5 pages long, and should not use more than 16 stamps (original or image).
The scholarships will be awarded solely on the basis of the marks secured in the Philately Project Work.
The amount of the scholarship is Rs 6,000 per recipient, and it will be paid at the rate of Rs 1,500 per quarter. Students should be members of their school philately clubs to be eligible for the scholarships.
