Former Congress minister J Geetha Reddy on Friday refuted the claims of health minister C Laxma Reddy that no maternity deaths had taken place in the Telangana government-run maternity hospitals.
Geetha Reddy pointed out that as many as 13 deaths were reported from Niloufer Hospital and the Koti government-run maternity hospital within the span of a week.
She alleged that the maternity deaths were a result of infections due to unhygienic conditions prevalent in the government hospitals. Use of infected saline and blood were also the reasons behind these deaths, she said.
The former minister also blamed the government hospitals of conducting illegal Caesarean operations on poor and illiterate women.
The health minister, while denying the allegations, blamed the previous Congress regime for encouraging private hospitals and nursing homes, which had led to an increase in such cases.
