The Charla police today claimed that they foiled an attempt by Maoists to exchange demonetized currency through their sympathizers with the arrest of two local traders and the seizure of invalid currency worth Rs. 70,000 along with various accessories like rifle slings and jungle boots, meant for the rebels, at Tippa Puram near the Taliperu reservoir in the Bhadrachalam division.
As per the cops, a police team apprehended two motorcycle-borne "Maoist sympathisers" - G Rajesh and S Ajit, Charla-based traders - during a usual vehicle checking drive near the Taliperu dam. The duo were heading towards the Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh, carrying demonetized cash and accessories as well as other commodities to Maoists in the neighbouring State.
The consignment included 10 whistles and belts, AK-47 rifle slings, five pairs of military grade shoes and 20 gun cleaning strings.
Security reportedly has been beefed up around weekly markets in tribal areas along the Telangana-Chhattisgarh border to forestall any attempts by the Maoists to exchange demonetized currency through vendors in the Agency areas of the district.
