Unable to bear the refusal of their parents to get them married, a pair of lovers attempted suicide by consuming insecticides, under Trimulgherry Police Station limits, on Monday. The attempt left the boy dead, while the girl was battling for her life.
According to Inspector Satyanna, the lovers were identified as Sirikonda Saidulu (25), son of Ramulu, a resident of Bharakatgudem, Munugula mandal in the district. The girl has been identified as Boda Swapna (17), daughter of Boda Mallaiah, a resident of Hakeempet.
Satyanna revealed that Saidulu was a teacher at a primary school in Hakeempet, and Swapna was a 10th standard student in the same school and had passed out last year. She is currently a student of the first year of Intermediate.
The two had fallen in love one year ago, and had approached their respective parents to get their consent for marriage.
Swapna's father was aghast at the proposal, and warned Saidulu to stay away from his daughter. Meanwhile, Saidulu's father, too, was busy, looking for prospective brides for his son.
On Sunday, Swapna and Saidulu met at the Trimulgherry market yard and discussed their future at length. It is believed that they came to the conclusion that it would be better to die alongside each other if they cannot live together.
They sat under a tree and consumed insecticides. Soon enough, Saidulu lost consciousness. Swapna, meanwhile, called her father and informed him of their suicide attempt.
Mallaiah rushed to the spot in an auto-rickshaw. He managed to place the two in the same vehicle, and rushed to the nearest hospital. On arrival at the hospital, doctors declared Saidulu brought dead. Swapna was shifted to a hospital in Suryapet with the help of a 108 ambulance.
Doctors stated that Swapna's condition is critical but out of danger. Police registered a case and shifted Saidulu to hospital for autopsy.
