Don't Rename Kala Thoranam: Naidu

Naidu said the government's move would hurt the sentiments of crores of Telugu people.
Hyderabad | 26th October 2010
Criticizing the move to rename the Telugu Lalitha Kala Thoranam after Rajiv Gandhi, Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, on Tuesday, wrote a letter to Chief Minister K Rosaiah demanding that he immediately withdraw the Government Order 1307 effecting the change.

Raising serious objection to the government's move to rename Lalitha Kala Thoranam, Naidu said the government's move would hurt the sentiments of crores of Telugu people, and termed it 'unwise'.

Stating that the open air auditorium was the brain child of former chief minister N T Rama Rao, he questioned the need for changing the name and urged the government to reconsider its decision.

The TDP chief appealed to the government to retain the name as usual and respect the emotions and sentiments of Telugu people.

Telugu can have a prefix of poets or artists who enriched it. It could be Nannaya, Pothana, etc., and not Rajiv or NTR as such names would draw aversion from a section of people. Let our political parties or persons belonging to them restrain themselves from naming each and everything after their leaders. PM Mahmohan Singh himself has realised the impact of overusing names of Nehur-Gandhi family members and advised their party workers to desist from such moves. Political parties should realise that names of politicians draw aversion in the minds of majority people. They should realise that their popularity does not increase but it decreases by using liberally the names of their leaders. Is not Congress' popularity declining decade after decade although they are naming every programme, building, road, project, etc., after their leaders like Indira, Rajiv, etc.
